About Me.
Hey, I'm Katie
In 2021, one of my best friends asked me to officiate she and her now-husband's wedding (also a very close friend of mine). I was so honoredâI can't tell you how much I love my friends, and how much this particular couple meant to me. I lived in a house with them, and called them mom and dad (jokingly, obviously, we're not weirdos).
I spent so much time researching, Googling, sleuthing for the best resources, figuring out what order things should be in, and learning what the heck a declaration of consent is.
Anyway, point is, I wasted a lot of time learning the basics rather than trying to perfectly capture their love story via my writing (the thing I'm actually pretty good at).
Overall, the ceremony went OK, some even said I did a "Great job!" but in my heart of hearts I knew I could have done better. I didn't captivate attendees with some of the amazing stories I had access to, AND THIS WAS THE WORST FEELING. My friends' wedding was a gorgeous, event-of-a-lifetime type wedding and I had heart-set on writing the most amazing ceremony they'd ever heard, and ultimately I thought it was just OK.
I don't think anyone should ever feel the way I felt. The thing is, if you know what you're doing, officiating a wedding can be seamless and so much fun, but it's just as easy to get bogged down by all the stuff you find online.
Fast forward to the third wedding I officiated and, oh man, it was night and day. I already had my template set so I could spend my time writing the pieces of the ceremony that needed to shine. I shared stories about the couple and felt confident and had fun, I knew where to add humor and levity. Ultimately, I was able to officiate the wedding I wanted to officiate the first time.
And so, Something Borrowed was born. It's natural to feel that you have to start from scratch in order to have a unique wedding ceremony, but take it from me, the best thing you can do is start with a plan, a template, tried-and-true resources, and some help from a friend (that's me!). I want you to feel like a hero your very first time, and would love to help you get there.
